Cinema is a product that does not have an expiry date. There is no accountability of the manufacturer to the consumer. If not liked, the viewer cannot ask for the ticket money (currently OTT subscription). Cinema is a hoax in India. There is no transparency in the fees of Hero Heroine. There is no public count of the money spent in the making of the film. No department in the country has integrated mathematics of how much the film earns. Cinema is the emotional subject of India and has never been as emotional as it is now. Neither when Gurudutt allegedly committed suicide nor when Divya Bharti fell down from his balcony in the evening. Had Ram known there would have been electronic media, what would have happened.
In the audio-visual era that turns the mind into a curd, Mahesh Bhatt has tried to weave a story of mentally disturbed people in his alleged directorial film ‘Sadak 2’. When Mahesh Bhatt directed three to four films simultaneously, he used to treat his students as fat and used to sit on the edge by putting a chair. In ‘Sadak 2’, she is Pooja Bhatt, the elder daughter of Mahesh Bhatt. He has the real weight of direction on his shoulder. One of Pooja Bhatt’s last films as director was ‘Kajrare’, in which Himesh Reshammiya was the hero and the film was released for just one show a day in only one theater across the country. The film’s heroine was from Pakistan, Sarah Lauren.
Mahesh Bhatt retired from the film ‘Cartridge’ 21 years ago and this time what he has loaded with his direction has backfired. Sanjay Dutt was there too, here too is Sanjay Dutt. But, it seems like Sanjay Dutt is disinterested to the audience. His eyes look elsewhere, his mind thinks of something else. Just like Arya plays the character of the road ‘Sadak 2’. She is a girl from home, from society, from the hospital. She feels that his mother has been killed. The father is a devotee of his Guruji. The girl wishes that she celebrates her 21st birthday by visiting Mount Kailash as her mother said. Here, the taxi driver with whom she has gone out on the Sadak, cannot think of her sweetheart worship. He appears to be trying to commit suicide early in the story.
The reels of Sushant Singh Rajput case also keep in the mind of the viewer while watching scenes of Arya trying to make him mentally deranged and Ravi’s suicide attempt. When the story starts on the Sadak, Aashiq, who is out of the jail of Arya, also gets on the way. His pet is an owl, that is why it is soon known. The characters quickly start changing colors. The one who comes as a murderer becomes a companion. The one who is responsible for the safety of the child becomes his enemy. The story is exactly like the spice movies of the nineties, just spice seems to have been stolen by someone during the making. Or it may be that Mahesh Bhatt has not got the chance to steal the idea from a foreign film, as he has done in his career.
So overall cinema has its blueprint. Is a character. There is a camera rotating at night and day. But there is nothing in the name of the story. Alia Bhatt has been tried in the name of acting. She wants to do something like ‘highway’ but a permanent fatigue has appeared on her face. She has lost facial innocence. Sanjay Dutt’s body does not support him anymore. Writing the story they deserve will gradually become a challenge for writers. Aditya Roy Kapur seems to have done the favor of getting work in ‘Aashiqui 2’ by doing this film. After ‘Malang’, there was hope of him doing something better, but the matter has become like a stigma again. Makarand Deshpande has certainly raised his hopes of making a comeback in cinema again. The character too got him strong this time and he was able to show his performance as well. The film also has Gulshan Grover, it has to be remembered.
The songs of Mahesh Bhatt’s films have been highlighted, this time too, in the songs Ankit Tiwari, Jeet Ganguly, Suniljit, Samidh Mukherjee, Urvi etc. have put their full emphasis. Javed Ali’s rendition of ‘Ishq Kamal’ and ‘Tum Se Hi’ also do wonders, but the rest of the songs do not leave an impact. ‘Sadak 2’ is the weakest film among Disney Plus Hotstar films released directly on OTT rather than in theaters.
