In the days when the Corona epidemic was at its peak, many elders of the country, many of whom must have lived above 80 years like my father, kept circling the headquarters of their districts for their survival in government papers. Proof of registration should be recorded. These elders have to do this every year in the country. A person has to appear on his own and tell that he is alive, and only then the government continues his pension. But, what will have happened on the hundreds of people who were declared dead on paper in all the districts of Uttar Pradesh 25-30 years ago. The landlords carried out this mass campaign everywhere from the city to the village countryside to grab people’s land, just ignoring the power of a ‘common man’. Shah Rukh Khan too said a little lately, ‘Don’t under estimate the power of a common man.’
So this is the story of a common man. Have you ever noticed how a common man, ie a common man, has been marginalized from the cinema. Now the stories are seen by those cinema makers know. What about the stories of those who know cinema? Sometimes an ‘exam’, a ‘Mattoo Ki Cycle’ or an ‘Anarkali of Aara’ comes, and then the line goes to such films which have the story of the common man to say, but this common man is common people. Rarely seen among themselves. Satish Kaushik also discovered this common man of his film ‘Pepper’ 17 years ago and must be admired by his spirit, stubbornness and passion that he constantly tried to bring this story to the screen.
Imtiaz Hussain, who wrote the dialogues of classic films like ‘This Night’s No Morning’, ‘Parinda’, ‘Vaastav’ and ‘Astitva’, on the suggested story of Satish Kaushik, has written a brilliant screenplay for the film ‘Kaagaz’. The weeks of research done sitting with the real characters of the story narrated in the film, Lal Bihari ‘Deceased’ etc., shows the effect on the film’s texture. Some dialogues continue to resonate in the ears until the end of the film, “Taking a loan is like raising a dog.” Have to give bread daily. One has to listen to his barking every day and sometimes if he does not give bread, he also bites.
Satish Kaushik’s art has been in this that he captures the sensations of common life very closely and manages to mold not only his acting but also the acting of his actors while making films as a director. He is not a director of money-making producers. He is the film director of people who want to make cinema, he has proved once again with the film ‘Kaagaz’.
After writing and directing all that is in the film is Pankaj Tripathi. It is pleasantly surprising to see that again in Hindi cinema, films are made and are also released with starring actors like Pankaj Tripathi in the lead role. Amol Palekar remembers seeing Pankaj Tripathi a lot. It is OTT’s sacrifice that the film could become universal. Otherwise, Satish Kaushik could hardly have reached the film where he has made it.
The story of Lal Bihari ‘Deceased’ and his struggle has been known all over the world. It is a pleasant feeling to see Pankaj here playing his character on screen. Just watching the film, the eyes get filled many times. The scene is about to rip the heart in which his wife arrives to fill the widow pension form with a vermilion in demand and a mangalsutra hanging around her neck. Monal has done well in the role of wife. Neha Chauhan, Mita Vashistha and Brijendra Kala have also given a lot. Yes, Sandeepa Dhar and her alleged item songs were not needed in the film.
The film ‘Kaagaz’ is also the hallmark of the changing phase of Indian cinema in which cinema viewing in cinema halls will be different and cinema sitting in homes will be different. This film is a great film in terms of OTT. This film is about to awaken the realities, to explain the humanity and to tell the flaws of the system, which a common man has to face every day in his country. It is not understood then that the system is for the benefit of human beings, or to exploit it.
